HOME AUTOMATION

Home automation was only for the rich and famous a decade ago. With extremely rapid advances in technology from tech giants Apple and Google these systems are now affordable to the masses. Many feel these are just gadgets for people who are lazy or who love tech. Nothing could be farther from the truth! We will agree that the light switches may seem to suit lazy people, however they have alternative uses. For instance, knowing if the kids still have their lights on, setting a vacation program or simply having the outside lights come on at sunset every day as opposed to using a timer, the same can be said for the smart wall plugs.

Automation Type

Lights on lights off, lock the door, close the garage all things that many wonder if they did when they leave home. Do it all with Siri, Google or Alexa. .

Being able to be alerted when the door opens or that a window breaking was detected. Check the cameras and advise authorities if needed.

Receive alerts on all your connected devices when CO2 or smoke levels become dangerous or get notified if there is a water leak detected.

With a many categories of smart home products, and many connection methods we can assure you that there is a product that can suit a need. From HomeKit by Apple, Google home or Z-Wave there are systems that require a monthly fee and others that do not. The easiest way to venture into the smart home conversion is to install a few compatible devices while you have an electrician on site. Generally we recommend to start with the most commonly used switches and the most commonly forgotten switches. From there your home can grow to cover plugs with devices that can be controlled with simple on and off functions. We have discovered that most of our clients enjoy their smart homes and will change all switches within a year to 18 months of the installation of their first.

The next steps to consider with any smart home are the security features. With CO2, smoke and water sensors, your smart home could save your life or that of a loved one by alerting you to a potential issue while you aren’t even home, allowing you to check in immediately and alert authorities if need be. The flood sensors can even be paired with an emergency shut off to the main water entrance. This will allow the main to shut off if a leak is detected in the laundry room, near the hot water tank or in the kitchen or bathroom, the outcome is that it could save you thousands of dollars in unwanted repairs and many unwanted weeks of renovations.

Beyond this there are all the home security features, cameras, door sensors, door locks, motion sensors, glass break sensors and more. Ponder this; the average home alarm monitoring is $40.00 per month. Usually if you don’t answer the phone your alarm company sends the police and you get hit with a false alarm or the police arrive to an already emptied home. If your smart home has integrated security features it will alert you instantly when each sensor is triggered. You can then validate the cameras to see what is going on in your home and only then decide whether to alert the police. Assuming the cost of $40 per month x 36 months (the minimum contract) you could invest $1400 into your smart home and self-monitor. This doesn’t even consider any fees the police might charge because the furry family member triggered your alarm.

At Habitec we believe a smart home is more than a gadget, its peace of mind!
